Northwest started slow offensively, but the defense was solid in a 60-52 win over Minnesota Crookston to open the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic at the Civic Arena in St. Joseph.
The Bearcats (3-0) shot 30-percent in the first half and trailed by one at the break.
Things quickly turned in the second half as the 'Cats went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. As a team, Northwest shot a much-improved 48-percent in the final 20 minutes of the game.
The Bearcats also went 2-17 from three-point range after making 26 threes combined in their first two games of the season.
Ryan Hawkins posted his first double-double of the season with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.
Trevor Hudgins finished with 28 points and three steals in the win.
The Bearcats play their second of two games at the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic Saturday at 4pm against MSU Moorhead.
